AI Search Visibility: How to Be Found When Someone Asks an AI
AI search visibility is how likely ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews or Perplexity is to name your business when someone asks a question you could answer. Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, is the work of improving that. It is not the same as ranking on Google. An AI reads a few sources, picks the ones it trusts and quotes them. Four things decide whether one of them is you.

AI search, GEO and AEO explained
- AI searchAny search where an AI writes the answer: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude.
- GEO, generative engine optimisationImproving how often AI answers cite and name you. GEO explained
- AEO, answer engine optimisationThe writing side of GEO: content an AI can lift and quote cleanly. What is AEO?
Why AI search matters, and why it is not everything
54 per cent of UK adults now use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini, up from 31 per cent a year earlier (Ofcom, 2026), and around 30 per cent of Google searches show an AI Overview. When one appears, people click fewer results: UK publisher clickthrough fell 47.5 per cent on desktop in one study.
Yet the traffic AI assistants send is tiny, with ChatGPT at 0.02 per cent of publisher referrals, and Google still handles more than 90 per cent of UK searches. The real value is being named while someone draws up a shortlist. That tends to show up later as people searching for you by name.
The four things that decide whether an AI names you
1. Can AI crawlers reach you?
Each AI company runs separate crawlers for training and for search. Block OpenAI’s GPTBot and you still appear in ChatGPT search; block OAI-SearchBot and you do not. Many UK sites block both without realising. Which AI crawlers to allow
2. Can your content be extracted?
The strongest citation factors are simply being crawlable and ranking well in ordinary search, so good SEO does most of the work. What changes is the writing: answer the question in the first sentence, keep each point self contained, and be clear about dates and sources. Writing content an AI will cite
3. Are your business details consistent?
One name, address, phone number and description, everywhere you appear, so an AI never has to guess which business you are. Structured data helps, though Google says no special markup is needed for AI features. Schema for AI search
4. Does the wider web back you up?
AI systems check what you say against reviews, directories, forums and press. Consistent mentions matter more than many mentions, and Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit are among the most cited sources of all.
Every AI platform behaves differently
Research across four engines found almost no overlap in which brands each one named for the same question, so each needs its own attention.
- ChatGPTUses live search for most business queries. Getting named in ChatGPT
- Google AI Overviews and AI ModeBuilt on Google’s index, so ordinary SEO carries most of the weight. Appearing in AI Overviews
- PerplexityShows its sources openly, which makes it the easiest place to test. Getting cited by Perplexity
- Copilot and ClaudeSmaller, but widely used inside businesses. Copilot and Claude
What changed in 2026
- Google Search Console now reports AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, and offers a control to opt out of AI features.
- Google-Extended controls Gemini training, not AI Overviews. It is often mixed up.
- Google Search does not use llms.txt files. What llms.txt does and does not do
How Phoenix Marketing helps
Our AI search and GEO services start with a hand checked AI visibility audit, scored out of 100 across crawler access, content, structured data, entity consistency and AI readiness. We publish how we score it. We check by hand because automated tools can mistake bot protection for an empty site. We ran it on ourselves first and scored 58.
From there, our managed AI search and GEO programme keeps the work going month by month, and our answer engine optimisation services cover the content on its own.
How we measure it
- Search Console’s generative AI report for AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions.
- The AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics 4 for visits from ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot.
- Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report for Copilot citations.
- Brand search volume, where the effect usually shows first.
- Monthly manual prompt testing. Measuring AI referrals

Frequently asked questions
Is GEO different from SEO?
Mostly it is SEO done more precisely. Google’s AI features are built on its core ranking systems. The main difference is writing answers that can be lifted and quoted cleanly.
Which AI assistants actually send traffic?
Very little from any of them yet. The value is being named while someone is choosing who to contact, which shows up as brand searches and enquiries.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Crawler fixes can register within days. Content and entity work usually takes three to six months to show consistently.
Can you guarantee we will be cited?
No one can. What we can do is remove the reasons you are being passed over, measure what changes and report honestly.
