How to Get Cited by Perplexity

Perplexity shows a numbered list of the sources behind every answer, which makes it the one surface where you can see exactly who was cited instead of you and read what they did differently. It retrieves live for almost every question and leans towards recent, clearly structured pages. That visible feedback loop is why it is the right place to test whether your content is genuinely extractable, before you spend anything on the surfaces that show you nothing.

Why this is the surface to test on

Every other assistant makes you infer. Perplexity tells you. Ask it a question your best page should answer, and the source list underneath is a competitive analysis you did not have to commission: these are the pages that were retrievable, relevant and quotable for that question, in order, today.

Use it as a diagnostic rather than a scoreboard. The question is not whether you appear. It is what the pages that did appear have in common, and whether your equivalent page has it. Nine times out of ten the answer is a directly stated answer near the top, a visible date, and a heading that matches the question rather than a category label.

What it appears to favour

  • Recency that is stated. A visible published or updated date on the page, not only in the markup. Undated pages lose to dated ones on anything that could plausibly change.
  • Clean structure. Headings that read as questions, short self contained sections, and lists where the content is genuinely a list.
  • Specificity. A named figure with a source attached beats a confident generalisation, because the first can be quoted and attributed and the second cannot.
  • Accessibility without negotiation. No interstitial, no consent wall between the request and the content, no rendering that depends on scripts a fetcher will not run.

PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, and the honest bit

Perplexity documents two agents. PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in results, and Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for training foundation models. Perplexity-User fetches a page because a user asked, and Perplexity states that it generally ignores robots.txt rules for that reason, which is the same position OpenAI and Anthropic take on their user initiated fetchers. Both publish IP ranges as JSON so you can verify a request rather than trust a user agent string.

If you want to be cited, allow PerplexityBot. Blocking it is a decision to be invisible here, and unlike the training crawlers there is no principle being defended by it.

Test manually, and retry before you conclude anything

One number from our own competitor work is worth carrying into this. Two of the sites we assessed in August 2026 scored between 25 and 30 out of 100 on the first automated pass and 85 and 90 on a later retry, with nothing altered on either site in between. Rate limiting had produced the first figure. We now treat any single pass result as provisional and retry with a delay before recording a score, which is why the audit is checked by a person.

The reason it belongs on this page rather than a technical one is that Perplexity gives you the manual alternative. You do not need a checker to find out whether you are cited here. You can simply ask, and read the list.

A repeatable test that takes ten minutes a month

  1. Write down five questions a good customer would actually type. Not your keywords. Their questions, in their words.
  2. Run all five in Perplexity, logged out, in a private window.
  3. For each, record whether you were cited, and which three sources were.
  4. Open the top cited page for the two questions you most want to win and note the three ways it differs from yours structurally, ignoring how it looks.
  5. Change one thing on your page. Wait a month. Run it again.

The discipline is in doing it the same way each time and writing it down. A one off check tells you nothing, because output varies between runs. A record over six months tells you whether anything you did worked, which is more than most AI visibility reporting can claim.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Perplexity easier to measure than the other assistants?

Because it publishes the source list for every answer. You can see whether you were used and who was used instead, without a tool and without inference. On the surfaces that show no sources you are reduced to asking the assistant about itself, which is not measurement.

Very little. Publisher analysis reported in January 2026 put it at roughly 0.002 per cent of referrals, an order of magnitude below ChatGPT. Its value is as a diagnostic and as presence in front of a research minded audience, not as a traffic channel.

Yes, unless you have decided to be absent from the surface. It is documented as a search crawler rather than a training crawler, so blocking it does not protect your content from model training. It only removes you from the results.

It retrieves live for most questions rather than relying on a stored snapshot, so a changed page can be picked up within days rather than months. That makes it the fastest surface to see whether an editorial change made any difference.
