How to Measure AI Referrals in GA4
Google Analytics 4 now carries an AI Assistant channel in its default channel group, covering arrivals from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek and Grok. That makes the custom segment most agencies built last year largely redundant. It also hides two things worth knowing: the channel explicitly excludes Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode, and referrals were never the main effect anyway. The larger one arrives as brand search.

Start by looking, before you build anything
Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the primary dimension to Session default channel group. If AI Assistant appears in that list, the grouping is already done for you and you can skip the segment building entirely. Google defines the channel as arrivals from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok.
Two caveats worth carrying. The list of recognised sources is Google’s and it will change without telling you, so an assistant that is not on it lands in Referral as it always did. And a manually tagged link with its own medium will not be reclassified, which is a reason not to hand tag anything you want counted here.
The exclusion that matters
The AI Assistant channel excludes Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. That is not an oversight. A click from an AI Overview is a click from a Google search results page, and it arrives as organic search, indistinguishable from any other. So the surface with by far the greatest reach in the UK contributes nothing at all to the number labelled AI in your analytics.
Anybody presenting an AI Assistant figure as their AI visibility number is therefore reporting the small surfaces and omitting the large one. This is worth saying to a board before somebody else says it to them.
Where the AI Overviews number actually lives
In Search Console, not in GA4. The generative AI performance report, introduced in June 2026 and rolled out worldwide by the end of August, reports impressions and clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode, filterable by page, country and device.
Its honest limitations: the two surfaces are combined into a single figure rather than split, the most recent data is preliminary and can change within hours, and the report shows nothing for a site that has used the generative AI opt out control. Even so it is the only first party measurement of the largest AI surface that exists, and it is free.
A reporting layout that survives scrutiny
| What to report | Where it comes from | What it is honestly worth |
|---|---|---|
| AI Assistant sessions and conversions | GA4 default channel group | Small, real, and attributable. Report as a trend, never as a total. |
| AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions and clicks | Search Console generative AI report | The largest surface. Combined across two features, so do not split it. |
| Pages cited in AI answers | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Page level citation evidence, free, and covers Copilot. |
| Branded search volume | Search Console, queries containing your brand | The leading indicator. Slow, noisy, and the one that actually moves. |
| Cited or not, by question | A recorded manual check, monthly | Qualitative, but the only thing that answers “are we named”. |
The measurement gap, and how to live with it
The effect you most want is a person reading an answer that names you, and then searching for you by name a day later. That journey arrives as brand organic search or as direct traffic. There is no parameter on it, no referrer, and no honest way to attribute it to the assistant that caused it.
So watch branded query volume in Search Console as a monthly trend alongside your AI visibility work, and say plainly what it is: a correlated indicator, not proof. The temptation to claim causation here is strong and the evidence does not support it. A report that says “branded searches are up 18 per cent over the period in which we did this work, which is consistent with but does not prove an effect” is worth more than a confident number that a competent finance director can take apart.
What to set up, in twenty minutes
- Check whether the AI Assistant channel is present in GA4. If it is, do not build a segment.
- Build one comparison only, for assistants Google has not yet recognised, based on session source containing the domains you care about.
- In Search Console, open the generative AI performance report and note the current baseline impressions figure with today’s date.
- Record your current monthly branded query volume in the same place.
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open the AI Performance report.
- Put a recurring monthly note in the calendar to read all four. Measurement nobody reads is not measurement.

Frequently asked questions
Why is our AI referral number so small?
Because it is measuring the small surfaces. The AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, which is where most UK AI exposure happens, and those arrive as ordinary organic search. A small number here is normal and is not evidence that the work is not landing.
Do we still need a custom AI segment in GA4?
Only for assistants Google has not added to its recognised list. Where the AI Assistant channel exists, building a parallel segment gives you two slightly different numbers for the same thing, and somebody will eventually put both in one report.
Does Search Console show AI Overview impressions?
Yes, through the generative AI performance report available since June 2026. It combines AI Overviews and AI Mode into one impressions figure rather than separating them, and it shows nothing if you have excluded your site from generative AI features.
How do we separate AI driven brand search from ordinary growth?
You cannot, cleanly. Watch branded query volume as a trend, annotate the dates of any significant AI visibility work, and report the relationship as consistent with rather than caused by. Anyone claiming a clean split is guessing with more confidence than the data allows.
