Why We’ve Signed the Armed Forces Covenant

At Phoenix Media Marketing, we spend most of our days helping other businesses tell their stories so we decided, for a change, to sit down and tell one of our own.

We’ve recently signed the Armed Forces Covenant, and our certificate has arrived. Right now it’s sitting on a desk in our Haywards Heath office, waiting for us to agree on the perfect spot on the wall.

So what is the Armed Forces Covenant?

In simple terms, it’s a promise. It says that people who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, should be treated fairly and shouldn’t lose out because of their service.

Thousands of organisations across the UK have signed it, from huge employers to small local businesses. Each one makes its own pledges about how it will show its support.

Why we signed

For us, this one is personal. Our Director Stuart, has always been passionate about the Armed Forces, and that has shaped the kind of company we want to be. Signing the Covenant felt like a natural next step. It turns that respect into something real, rather than something we just talk about.

We also know how much people from a forces background bring to a team. Reliability, teamwork, adaptability and staying calm under pressure are exactly what you want in a busy agency.

What’s next

Signing the Covenant is step one. Next, we’re working towards the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, starting with the Bronze award. That means looking closely at how we recruit, how we’d support staff with forces connections, and how we can play our part in the local community.

We’ve also appointed one of our team as our Armed Forces Covenant rep. Their job is to make sure our pledges don’t just sit in a drawer, and to be the go-to person for anything forces-related.

We’ll share updates as we go. We’ll also be marking dates like Remembrance Sunday and Armed Forces Day, so keep an eye on our socials.
