What is your business story?

With Stuart Farrell-Humphrey

Have you told your story?

We hear the phrase “Tell the story of your business” all the time. But what is your business story, really? It’s not just a timeline of events or a glossy “About Us” paragraph. It’s the journey, the heart, the turning points, and the very human experiences that shaped who you are and what you do.

And for some of us, that story includes more than just business.
It includes lessons learned from history. Moments of reflection. Battles not just in the market, but in the mind. And the desire to make a difference in the community around us.

As someone who often draws inspiration from WW2 history, I’ve always been fascinated by the resilience of ordinary people who faced extraordinary circumstances. Their strength, loyalty, and selflessness remind us that every journey, including yours and mine, is built on courage. The courage to start. The courage to continue. The courage to keep moving forward even when the outcome is uncertain.

And isn’t that, in many ways, the essence of entrepreneurship?

The Human Story Behind the Business

When we sit down to write our business story, we may start with the usual: where the idea came from, how the business started, the challenges we overcame.

But if the process feels too easy, too tidy, we probably haven’t gone deep enough. Just like in wartime memoirs  the truth sits in the personal reflections: The moments where we doubted ourselves. The days where we were exhausted but carried on anyway. The times we questioned whether we were capable, strong enough, or worthy. And that brings me to something close to my heart: mental health.

We don’t talk about it enough in business.  We speak about strategy, performance, revenue and expansion  but not about the internal battlefield we often face to show up every day. Yet, acknowledging that human complexity is exactly what makes your story authentic, relatable, and powerful.

If you’ve had days where you’ve struggled you are not alone. I have too. And speaking about it doesn’t make us weaker.
It makes us honest.

Your Story Serves More Than Just You

Your story is also about the impact you have. For me, that includes working in the community, supporting local charities, and giving time to causes that matter.

When we show up for others, it reminds us what business is really about: connection, contribution, responsibility, purpose.

Your audience wants to know the person behind your business, the values you stand for, what you care about, and how you show it beyond words.

The Courage to Be Known

When you share your story, you are asking your audience to do three big things:

  • Trust you

  • Connect with you

  • And choose you

Those are not small asks.

So how can we ask that of others if we are not willing to offer something real in return?

This doesn’t mean oversharing or exposing everything it simply means being sincere.

Your story doesn’t need to be dramatic. It doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be yours.

Your Story Is Enough

Whether it’s shaped by history, resilience, mental health, family, charity work, or the quiet everyday moments, your story has value.

Your story holds meaning. Your story is worth telling. And if you’d like support shaping that story into something powerful, compelling and beautifully human, that’s exactly what we do at Phoenix Media Marketing Ltd.

We help you find your voice. We help you craft your message. We help you share your story with pride and purpose. Because your story matters. And it’s time people heard it.

Why West Sussex Businesses Are Choosing Independent Marketing Agencies Over London

If you’re a business owner in West Sussex, you’ve probably been approached by a London agency at some point. Slick deck, impressive client logos, eye-watering retainer fee. But if you’ve ever actually worked with one, you’ll know what often follows. A junior account manager you never speak to, templated strategies that could apply to anyone, and a bill that doesn’t reflect the results.
